Understanding oral cancer treatment

Oral cancer is a significant health concern in India affecting 20 in every 1,00,000 population and accounts for 30% of all cancers. Moreover, its prevalence steadily rising. Understanding the treatment options available can empower you to make informed decisions and seek timely medical intervention.

Diagnosis is the first step in combating oral cancer. Regular check-ups are essential for early detection. If suspicious lesions are found, a biopsy is performed to confirm the presence of cancer cells. Once diagnosed, the treatment plan is tailored to the individual’s specific condition, considering factors like the stage of cancer, overall health, and personal preferences.

Surgery is often the primary treatment for oral cancer. Depending on the extent of the disease, surgery may involve removing part or all of the affected tissue, including the tumour, nearby lymph nodes, and sometimes parts of the jawbone or tongue. It also includes reconstruction.

In cases where surgery alone may not be sufficient, additional treatments such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy may be recommended. Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to target and destroy cancer cells, while chemotherapy utilizes drugs to kill cancer cells or stop their growth. These treatments may be administered before or after surgery to maximize effectiveness.

For advanced-stage oral cancer targeted therapy and immunotherapy are emerging as promising treatment options. These therapies work by targeting specific molecules or boosting the body’s immune response against cancer cells, offering new hope for patients with limited treatment options.

Throughout the treatment journey, supportive care plays a crucial role in managing side effects and improving quality of life. This may include nutritional support, pain management, and psychological counselling to address the emotional challenges of living with cancer.

Prevention is better than cure. Avoiding tobacco in all forms, including smoking and chewing tobacco, and limiting alcohol consumption can significantly reduce the risk of developing oral cancer. Additionally, maintaining good oral hygiene and regular check-ups are vital for early detection and prompt treatment.
